Flow-oriented anomaly-based detection of denial of service attacks with flow-control-assisted mitigation

Flooding-based distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks present a serious and major threat to the targeted enterprises and hosts. Current protection technologies are still largely inadequate in mitigating such attacks, especially if they are large-scale. In this doctoral dissertation, the Computer Network Management and Control System (CNMCS) is proposed and investigated; it consists of the Flow-based Network Intrusion Detection System (FNIDS), the Flow-based Congestion Control (FCC) System, and the Server Bandwidth Management System (SBMS). These components form a composite defense system intended to protect against DDoS flooding attacks. The system as a whole adopts a flow-oriented and anomaly-based approach to the detection of these attacks, as well as a control-theoretic approach to adjust the flow rate of every link to sustain the high priority flow-rates at their desired level. The results showed that the misclassification rates of FNIDS are low, less than 0.1%, for the investigated DDOS attacks, while the fine-grained service differentiation and resource isolation provided within the FCC comprise a novel and powerful built-in protection mechanism that helps mitigate DDoS attacks

THE EFFECT OF ARCH-SUPPORTED FUNCTIONAL INSOLES TO AVOID OVERUSED INJURIES DURING RACE WALKING

This study investigates the effectiveness of functional insoles on plantar pressure distribution during race walking in order to reduce the high plantar pressure and force on race walkers, who tend to suffer from overuse injury. A total of 20 male race walkers were recruited as subjects. Each participant completed a race walk with and without functional insoles. Plantar pressure insoles were used to collect plantar pressure data. A two-way analysis of variance with a mixed design was used to determine the difference between the two conditions. Results show that the use of functional insoles reduced the peak pressure and the impulse in the metatarsal heads and heels and thus suggest that functional insoles reduce the overuse injury risks of these parts. The first ground reaction force peak also decreased. This result suggests that functional insoles reduce the risks of foot and leg injuries

Effective Semisupervised Community Detection Using Negative Information

    Get PDF
The semisupervised community detection method, which can utilize prior information to guide the discovery process of community structure, has aroused considerable research interests in the past few years. Most of the former works assume that the exact labels of some nodes are known in advance and presented in the forms of individual labels and pairwise constraints. In this paper, we propose a novel type of prior information called negative information, which indicates whether a node does not belong to a specific community. Then the semisupervised community detection algorithm is presented based on negative information to efficiently make use of this type of information to assist the process of community detection. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on several artificial and real-world networks and shows high effectiveness in recovering communities

Numerical simulation of high-speed water-entry for hemispherical-nosed projectile

    Get PDF
Aiming at the lack research of high-speed water-entry for large projectile, this paper studied the high-speed water-entry for hemispherical-nosed projectile in the method of fluid-solid coupling. Good agreements were obtained compared with the theoretical results. The modalities of water were calculated such as cavity, uplift and pressure. The velocity and deceleration curves of water-entry were gained. Numerical research shows that there is heavy shock pressure on the projectile and pressure waves in water by a projectile impacting into water at high speed, the pressure at the apex and the vicinity is much higher than the rest of area. The projectile’s peak acceleration is in linear correlation with the square of impact velocity. The simulation affords bases for impact-resistant design of the airdropped projectile, and of certain value to investigation of other correlative bodies’ high-speed water-entry

Band gap engineering of N-alloyed Ga2O3 thin films

The authors report the tuning of band gap of GaON ternary alloy in a wide range of 2.75 eV. The samples were prepared by a two-step nitridation method. First, the samples were deposited on 2-inch fused silica substrates by megnetron sputtering with NH3 and Ar gas for 60 minutes. Then they were annealed in NH3 ambience at different temperatures. The optical band gap energies are calculated from transmittance measurements. With the increase of nitridation temperature, the band gap gradually decreases from 4.8 eV to 2.05 eV. X-ray diffraction results indicate that as-deposited amorphous samples can crystallize into monoclinic and hexagonal structures after they were annealed in oxygen or ammonia ambience, respectively. The narrowing of the band gap is attributed to the enhanced repulsion of N2p -Ga3d orbits and formation of hexagonal structur

Experimental investigation on feedback insensitivity in semiconductor ring lasers

    Get PDF
The insensitivity to optical feedback is experimentally measured for a semiconductor ring laser (SRL) and compared to that of a Fabry–Perot laser (FPL) fabricated with the same technology and on the same material. An analysis of the optical spectra reveals that the SRL remains nearly unaffected for values of optical feedback as strong as −23  dB. Furthermore, through both optical linewidth and self-mixing measurements, we show that the tolerance to feedback in SRLs is 25–30 dB stronger than in FPLs. This property makes SRLs very interesting candidates for the development of feedback-insensitive optical sources

Applying Back Propagation Algorithm and Analytic Hierarchy Process to Environment Assessment

This paper designs a new and scientific environmental quality assessment method, and takes Saihan dam as an example to explore the environmental improvement degree to the local and Beijing areas. AHP method is used to assign values to each weight 7 primary indicators and 21 secondary indicators were used to establish an environmental quality assessment model. The conclusion shows that after the establishment of Saihan dam, the local environmental quality has been improved by 7 times, and the environmental quality in Beijing has been improved by 13%. Then the future environmental index is predicted. Finally the Spearson correlation coefficient is analyzed, and it is proved that correlation is 99% when the back-propagation algorithm is used to test and prove that the error is little

    Maritime cognitive workload assessment

    Get PDF
The human factor plays the key role for safety in many industrial and civil every-day operations in our technologized world. Human failure is more likely to cause accidents than technical failure, e.g. in the challenging job of tugboat captains. Here, cognitive workload is crucial, as its excess is a main cause of dangerous situations and accidents while being highly participant and situation dependent. However, knowing the captain’s level of workload can help to improve man-machine interaction. The main contributions of this paper is a successful workload indication and a transfer of cognitive workload knowledge from laboratory to realistic settings
